Junk Munkiez Cleans Eugene

Eugene and Springfield, Oregon has a trash problem. A bad one! This is due to the large amount of homeless living within our cities. It's very common to see piles of garbage scattered along city streets. Junk Munkiez decided to help it's community by offering to clean up several locations suggested by community members. The owner, Derek Hatcher did this by publishing a video on Facebook asking residents to provide locations they'd like to see tackled. One by one, I went to the locations shooting live before and after videos on Facebook while mentioning the persons name that suggested it. Over a thousand pounds of debris has so far been collected over a month time span, and the project is still in progress.

More information regarding the volunteer project can be found by simply searching #JunkMunkiezCleansEugene on Facebook. You can also read an article that The Register Guard put out and watch a short KMTR NBC 16 news clip on the subject.

Something noticed while cleaning up these troubled areas is how fast the trash comes back but also how some locations seem to have some sense of order. Just like the rest of us, homeless produce waste. The only difference is they don't have access to curbside garbage service like the rest of us. What many of them end up doing is piling their disposed items in one spot. This intrigued me and had me wondering if there was a more permanent solution to preventing the refuse from accumulating in the first place.

There's most likely several different methods that could help prevent this but as one idea, what if the city provided large drop off boxes, trash bags, and sharps containers for the homeless to dump their trash in? There would be some security issues that would need to be resolved first. Passersby that can afford waste management services may take advantage of these bins and illegally dump their trash there as well. Plus, although some homeless care enough to at least contain their trash, many others don't and will throw it anywhere. A tough problem to be solved.

Solutions To Problems

Junk Munkiez  provides one service, a solution to a problem!  As we live our lives we collect stuff. At one moment in time we may believe many of the items we acquire are essential for life or will finally bring us happiness. Unfortunately though, it's much like the Leprechaun's treasure at the end of every rainbow, you'll finally be rewarded that treasure or happiness if you can simply reach it... but you won't.  We buy items thinking it's making us happy when in reality it's the release of the craving for that object. Sure enough, this urge is back very soon and the seek to satisfy that craving returns. Before you know it, you have a pile of junk growing in your garage, basement, and spare bedroom.  Don't worry, you're not alone. It happens to pretty much all of us. No seriously, we see it everyday! Marketing specialists rely on this human behavior. Heck, this article is a form of advertising technically.  Enough of the depressing talk...

Junk Munkiez Vision

By now, many Eugene and Springfield, Oregon residents are beginning to understand who we are and what we do. We've been hauling customers' junk to donation, recycling, and to the Lane county dump facilities since June of 2016. We started out very small. We only had one old 1998 Penske moving box van. That had been bought and used by other companies and eventually to a private owner. We bought it from a lady that lived in a tiny town just a few miles North East of Lincoln City called Otis, Oregon. We found her listing on Craigslist and payed her $2,100 to take it off her hands. It wasn't in the best of shape, it had over 297,000 miles, and had some repairs it needed before it was street legal. After spending about $800 to get it up to par we were excited to get to work! Only problem, no one knew who we were! With no experience in business management, marketing, and everything else in between we struggled to find work in the beginning.  The Hatcher brothers and Derek...
